The 10 Best Places to Eat in Sapporo, Hokkaido

Sapporo has a famous downtown named Susukino. Lots of people stay there when they come to Hokkaido. What about food? There are lots of restaurant there, so it’s hard to choose. Don’t you feel you want to try something local? Today, we would like to introduce local good restaurants.

1． Kaimi Hachikyo

This restaurant has appeared many TV and magazines. “Original tsukkomeshi” is something you should order if you go this place. When you order, they bring just white rice. Then they bring lots of salmon roe and put on the rice until it drops from the bowl.

Eat shining salmon roe with rice. There are more seafood like shrimp and oysters. Ask them their suggestion of the day.

2． Yakuzen curry honpo Ajanta souhonke

If you hear curry in Sapporo, it means soup curry. There are more than 200 restaurants that serve soup curry in Sapporo. This restaurant is opened 1975, popular even in local. Over 30 spices and 15 kinds of kanpo are mixed and takes 6 hours to make this soup curry. It’s completely organic, they use vegetables and meat that are made in Hokkaido.

They make only 50 bowls of the day. You have to line before it opens if you want to eat. Their No.1 menu is “ Tori curry”, it has two big bone chickens and carrot, and green paper in it. It is huge that makes you full. On Saturday and Sunday, they have “ lamb curry” that has lamb in it. Please try it!

3． Mendokoro Shirakaba sanso

Three types of ramen that is famous in Hokkaido, Hakodate salt, Asahikawa soy source, and Sapporo miso. There are over 100 places that you can eat miso ramen in Sapporo. There are some areas that are gathered different kinds of ramen. There are other than miso ramen of course, but how about trying Sapporo miso ramen?

This restaurant has ramen that is strong but not too greasy. You can say their miso ramen is the top of the miso ramen. They also have soy source and salt, so how about try different flavors each day? They have 6 restaurants in Sapporo and also 1 at Shin chitose airport.

4． Kappo Izakaya Chokuei Chitose zuru

“Chitose zuru” is famou for only local sake in Sapporo. This place is their Izakaya that you can eat good seasonal food with their sake. There are 3 restaurants in downtown, “Chokuei Chitose zuru” is in central of Susukino.

All meal is good but in winter, we suggest nabe, in summer, we suggest fried corn. They have over 30 kinds of sake, so if you like Japanese sake, you should go. In the restaurant, they have counter seats and private room, so it is fine either going with group or alone. And then if you find your favorite flavor, go to Chitosezuru museum. You can buy sake or you can taste.

5． Sushizen

In Sapporo, there are lots of sushi such as expensive sushi and sushi go round. You can also eat sushi at izakaya. It is hard to find your favorite one since there are lots of sushi restaurants in Sapporo.

So we suggest “Sushizen”. It opened in 1971. The owned is chosen as “master of nowadays”. Also in 2011, he awarded yellow ribbon medal. His sushi is like art. If you want to taste it, go to Sushizen!

6． Jacksonville

Jacksonville was opened in 2008, that you can eat real American hamburger. The owner opened this restaurant as he met this amazing burger in Jacksonville, USA, and wanted to serve same flavor and service. It is not only a big burger.

The ban is made by local flour, cook the burger beef order by order, local vegetables, and original source. They have like cooked pineapple, avocado, and egg as toppings, so you can make original burger. They also have like french fries or salad as side menu, you will be full. They change menu for lunch and dinner. If you feel you want to eat meat, you should go this place!

7． Kaisen Shokudo Kitano gourmet tei

Lots of people stop at Sapporo fish market to buy seafood as souvenir. There are over 60 stores in this market. There are over 20 restaurants, you can eat sushi, ramen and curry here. But if you go to this market, you should eat seafood rice bowl. Our suggestion is seafood rice bowl of “Kaisen shokudo Kitano gourmet tei” that is 3210 yen.

It has like sweet shrimp, squid and scallop on the special rice. Also their No1 menu is “sea urchin and salmon roe rice bawl” that is also 3210 yen. They have lots of things on menu so it is hard to choose one. If you go with group or family, sharing is a good idea. They have free ride from some hotels in Sapporo and JR Sapporo station North exit.

8． Kirin Beer shinkan urban ten

There might be a lot of people who want to drink good beer since they come to Sapporo. “Ichiban shibori” is sent directly from Kirin factory, that use water that is chosen good water by government.

Lamb Mongolian mutton barbecue is what you might want to eat with beer. They are sent from Australia without being frozen, so it is fresh. It’s soft and you can taste the flavor of lamb itself. Other than this, you can eat local food such as Japanese beef, pork, potatoes, and asparagus. There is nothing better than beer and Mongolian mutton barbecue for night of Sapporo!

9． Rokkatei

“Rokkatei” is a snack company that makes “marusei butter sand” that is famous as gift from Hokkaido. You see their products mainly in Obihiro or airports, but you can buy in Sapporo too.

You can buy their pie at the store in Sapporo. This pie has custard that expires 3 hours after. The pie absorbs water of cream and makes it not crunchy so you have to eat soon to enjoy the texture. So they sell the pie only some stores in Obihiro or Sapporo. It is hard to bring it home of course. Eat it as soon as you buy. 2nd floor of Sapporo store is café that you can eat like pizza or dessert.

10． Itadakimasu

“Itadakimasu” has lots of restaurants all around Hokkaido. Mongolian mutton barbeque is very close to peole in Hokkaido but in another places, it is not. If you want to eat Mongolian mutton barbeque, “ Itadakimasu” is a good place to eat.

Lots of restaurants use Australian or New Zealand lamb but they use only local lamb. It took 24 years to gather the idea, took 17 years to search, and they bred sheep for 9 years to open the restaurant. They have counter seats so it is fine to go even you go there alone.
