Arima Onsen were written about in the famous writings of 631 A.D. They are located 30 minutes North by train from Kobe, Sannomiya. It is a convenient location not just for an overnight trip but day trips to public baths such as “Kinsen” and “Ginsen”. 1. Mitsumori
This is a shop located along the main street of the Arima Onsen town in a very visible location. It was opened in the Meiji-era when the owner found out that the natural carbonation of Arima Onsen was good for one’s health. He began by making thin cakes of rice and grilling them to serve.
Today they continue to use the traditional ingredients and methods to prepare these cakes. These cakes contain no eggs, milk or preservatives and are a treat that children to elderly can enjoy.
You can also enjoy rounder manjyu cakes. They are made out of mountain yam and brown sugar. Due to their small size, you can enjoy a few to truly appreciate the unique yet delicious flavor.Why not begin your walk around town here!

2. Takenaka Butcher Shop
This is a butcher shop with over 80 years of history. Here they process the high-end brands of beef such as Kobe beef. These shops serve ryokan and hotels so you can be sure you are getting the best.
The best item to purchase and enjoy here is the beef croquette. The regular croquette can be enjoyed for 130 yen. With these croquette, you can fully enjoy the sweetness of the potato.
The beef croquette is 250 yen and is filled with Kobe beef. There are some seats in front of the store so you can enjoy the fresh fried croquettes. Once you try these, you are sure to fall in love!

3. Houkyuuan
This is a shop along the main street where you can enjoy fish paste fry, also called tempura.In the Kansai area, fish paste fried is called tempura and is served fresh as a snack or as a side. Here is a shop where you can enjoy them fresh.
There are many different varieties available such as those with gobo, cheese, and pickled garlic. You can enjoy any of these on a stick perfect for taking along on your walk! When you come and visit the sights please do try this tempura!

4. Pan du Bo
This is the most popular bread shop of Arima. The popular bread here is the “Tanba Black bean Bread”, “Arima Sansho Bread”, and “Kinsen Salt Bread”. They are all quite unique.
The do sell out by mid-afternoon so be sure to arrive earlier. Even if you prefer rice on most occasions, why not get up early and enjoy the freshest bread of the morning here!

5. Sabou Tick-tock
This restaurant is found in a remodeled old home. Here you can enjoy a feeling of nostalgia and enjoy the feeling of the Showa period.
Inside the shop you can find a pinball machine that only adds to the atmosphere. Here you can enjoy very health varieties of dishes such as curry and omelet-rice with ingredients from the local area. This is the perfect place to enjoy lunch.

6. Soba Dosanjin
Here you can enjoy Kansai style soba. Here the soba flour is made from the wheat fresh so the aroma of the soba is extraordinary.
The Sudachi (citrus fruit) Cooled Soba is most popular in the summer time. The sudachi fruit slice on top is beautiful for looking at as well.

7. Kutsurogiya
The shop is located in a remodeled traditional home. Here the main dish served is the rice with various meat and vegetables mixed in known as “Kamameshi”.
The seafood and other vegetables are those sent here directly from Awaji Island. It is the perfect shop for a slightly luxurious lunch.
This is also a great shop for those who are looking to enjoy their room in a private dining area.

8. Sain Hanaki
This is a shop where you can truly jump back in time. Though it is slightly small, it is stylish and the traditional sweets offered here are wonderful. You can enjoy parfaits made with the special cookies of the area.

This is a shop that is centered around beans and it serves sweets made with soy milk and tofu.

This is a gelato shop that just opened in 2015. Here everything is made fresh inside the shop. The flavors offered are all local including the Rokko Premium Milk and Arima Cider flavors. There are 18 special flavors.
